Hello friends, This is a portrait of me when I was four. I didn’t know when it was taken that I would become a photographer and I certainly had no idea that my main subjects would be children. What I do know is that this portrait has everything to do with how I work with children when I’m photographing them. During the session the photographer asked me to face backwards, twist around and adjust my head so he could get both my very long hair and my face in the picture. It was a great idea but it didn’t feel good because it pinched my back. He didn’t seem to care when I told him and I could tell he was frustrated. When I started my business I made it my goal to have every child I work with feel comfortable when they’re with me—whether it’s in the studio or on location. I have a very relaxed attitude when I work; I believe strongly in letting kids be kids. I’ve come to know that creating portraits is a collaboration and when the children I work with know I respect them, they’re more inclined to work with me to get portraits their parents will love and they’ll enjoy in years to come. I use a variety of chairs, benches, stools and steps in my studios so everyone from my youngest newborns to my oldest children feel safe and secure when they’re being photographed. When suggesting areas for outdoor sessions I take the age of children into account because I want to be sure they have plenty of room to roam and romp while being certain the location gives me what’s needed to do my work. All that attention to comfort means we have a great time. And having a great time makes for great portraits. If your family needs portraits please get in touch, I’d be honored to work with you. Lea
