what to know for a great maternity session
when’s the best time for maternity portraits?
Most women feel they look their best between twenty and twenty-four weeks
As you might guess, there’s no one best time to create maternity portraits. Every woman and every woman’s body is different and each woman feels a different level of comfort as her belly grows, but I’ve found that most women feel they look their best between twenty and twenty-four weeks—the baby bump is definitely showing but momma still feels like she’s looking good. And she is!
Can my husband/partner be included in my maternity session?
Absolutely! Husbands and partners are always a welcome part of the maternity session. In fact I love having them participate! Husbands and partners often reveal a world of emotion during the session and it’s a blast for me to witness and photograph couples together at this exciting time.
What should I wear for my maternity photos?
Gone are the days of loose, baggy maternity clothing—that bump is gorgeous and there’s nothing wrong with showing it off! Form-fitting dresses, jeans, shorts, and even just a bra and panties turn your glorious body into a magnificent sculpture of curves that looks amazing when photographed.
Black is always stunning.
White looks soft and classic.
It’s fun, if you know the gender of your unborn child, to add some color in your clothing to hint at that.
If your husband/partner comes to the session be sure to do a bit of coordinating so you’ll look great in your portraits together.
For guys I suggest simple, comfortable clothing with a minimum of fuss—classic t-shirts and sweaters are hard to beat. Small patterns such as checks or stripes always look classy. Button-downs never go out of style. Khakis, jeans, or even dress shorts look great in maternity portraits.
